5.0 out of 5 stars still exciting after all these years
This beautifully designed and illustrated book is a real classic. A brief and compelling outline of the author's philosophy is followed by a series of games that help young people (of all ages!) see, feel, hear and touch nature in new ways that sensitise, educate and excite.
Despite its 'age' there are millions of young people who would find most of the games new and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Natural learning
As a student teacher i have found this book very helpful when trying to make my lessons 'different', motivating and fun learning. Some of the ideas are somewhat archaic, but carefully adapted, provide a great basis for curriculum lessons. I have also used them within Brownie group activities. They provide a natural and alternative approach to learning and developing...

5.0 out of 5 stars Clasic guide to outdoor education games for children, 11 Feb 1997
By A Customer
Describes Cornell's philosophy of outdoor education and
gives instructions for playing outdoor education games
that work. This is an excellent guide for
educators, camp counselors and scout leaders. Some
games are designed to work in forested areas and are
difficult to adapt to treeless areas.

I thought this was a useful book for a childcare practitioner or parent with plenty of ideas that could be adapted for the uk. I especially enjoyed the focus on observation and listening to nature, lots of attention on presenting knowledge of nature first hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharing Nature: An empathetic approach to the environment, 31 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sharing Nature With Children: 20th Anniversay Edtion: The Classic Parents' and Teachers' Nature Awareness Guidebook Revised & Expanded (Paperback)
Cornell realised that his traditional approach to teaching children failed to convey real understanding and more importantly a sense of awe and wonder. He developed an approach to learning that utilises interactive games and experiences to help children empathise with the nature they have come to explore.
This book encapsulates the theory behind the games, before going on to describe many of the activities that can be used to help children explore nature n this particular way.
This approach has since become a whole system of learning known as 'Flow Learning'.
The book is a practical guide to suitable activities and is recommended to teachers and parents that may wish to use these alternative methods which help children appreciate and get closer to the natural world, of which they , of course , are a part.
