5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome for the driving enthusiast
While searching for Formula One books you can rarely find any that cover the technique of driving a Formula One car.
Ayrton Senna's Principles of Race Driving is one of the few books that is devoted to the technique of racing. It is also the only book that Ayrton Senna ever wrote, albeit with the help of a journalist.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great insight into Senna, not so good as a learning tool.
I have this book, bought new when it was released.

I bought it to learn some better driving techniques, and it does a reasonable job of explaining the basics of car control in an easy-to-understand manner. It's clearly illustrated throughout and has some great pictures of Ayrton, probably the greatest racing driver who ever lived.
There are sections on...

This review is from: Ayrton Senna's Principles of Race Driving (Paperback)
While searching for Formula One books you can rarely find any that cover the technique of driving a Formula One car.
Ayrton Senna's Principles of Race Driving is one of the few books that is devoted to the technique of racing. It is also the only book that Ayrton Senna ever wrote, albeit with the help of a journalist.
In 24 chapters Senna explains each and every little thing that comes around when you're racing. From placing the hands at the right position upon the steering wheel to driving through various types of corners and chicanes.
Senna also explaines how to overtake and how to maximise slipstreams during the races, and a whole host of other details.
This book will prove to be one of the big learning proccess for anyone who would like to start racing, or would like learn some more about the techniques involved in motor-racing

There are sections on general fitness as well as diet and mental attitude. Certainly shows you just what sort of dedication Ayrton possessed and what made him such a formidable opponent on the track.

BUT: (And it's a big but)... This book is not so good as an instruction manual to really get your teeth into if you want to improve your driving. It covers an awful lot of ground, but not too much in any detail, sadly. I get the feeling that this book was written more for Senna's fans rather than for the instruction of new racing drivers.

If you want a book that will change the way you drive and that will give you results you can see in your lap times then you need this:

Drive to Win: The Essential Guide to Race Driving

Written by an American, granted. But it does cover right hand turns as well as left. In fact, this is without a doubt the best manual on driving technique that I've ever read.

If you want an entertaining and comprehensive driver autobiography from a far more personable and likeable guy then I would reach for this:

Derek Bell: My Racing Life

Which, if you shop around, can be found autographed and new for 25. Like my copy. :-)

I still love "Principles of Race Driving" of course, but I love it as a reminder of a great driver. Probably the greatest ever. But if I want to understand a finer point of race driving then "Drive To Win" is the volume I would reach for every time.
