4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for those who are already learning
As an ex-pupil of Wendy's ( Ex because I moved away)I liked this book greatly. Not because of it's sentimental value to me (Although there is some) but because it does give a precise insite into the spiritual side of Aikido that most beginners overlook. Even if you have only undergone a couple of lessons this book will help you understand that Aikido is not scarey or...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
If you want a beginner's book, don't buy this one. Lack of good pedagogics and very unimpressive pictures makes this book something for the more experienced aikidoka. Might be something for you that have been training for a year or so.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended as an Aikido guide, even for beginners., 20 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: First Steps in Aikido (Paperback)
Been studying Aikido for 13 years, came across the book in a book shop. Bought it because the information about Norio Tao and Shigeho Tanaka looked interesting. Let down by rest of book.
Typograhical errors, Spelling mistakes and some instructional errors. eg. The Kanji on pg 4. is translated as "Connections" when it actually means "Loyalty". "Gyaku katate dori" is taught in the book as "Right-hand to right-hand grip or left to left", but that should be "Ai-hanmi or Kosa dori". Gyaku should be right to left and vice versa. Illustration of techniques seem to open tori to Kashiwaza and leaves gaps for counters. If a beginner or even non-beginners do it this way, I fear it will develop bad habits. Very surprised and disappointed.
For the price of the book. Shioda's "Dynamic Aikido" would be better value.

Even if you have only undergone a couple of lessons this book will help you understand that Aikido is not scarey or impossible and that only time and dedication is required. It is not meant as a step by step guide, only as an overview and history guide and learning aide. Read it, absorb it, and then carry on your path.......

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacking on Martial Intent, 28 Aug 2003
This review is from: First Steps in Aikido (Paperback)
Having studied Aikido & seen some very good instructors there are lots of holes in what is presented.
Don't take what is presented as Gospel. Author demonstrates an "incomplete" understanding of Aiki.
Also author has been "hoodwinked" on some "O'Sensei" tales.
