5.0 out of 5 stars The Roman Way, 5 Nov 2010
This review is from: Roman Way (Walkabout) (Paperback)
As a keen walker, if you want to add a punch to your walking experience and enrich yourself with the historical information of the area, this book is for you. I have done only a part of the entire circuit but can vouch for the fact that it will only make your walk more interesting, in addition to enjoying the nature and its beauty. It's best applied when parts of the relevant section from the book are read aloud to the group during the walk, giving rise to sharing of information and discussions around the topic. It's been a real pleasure exploring the roman way... I hope to complete the circuit soon!

Keen walkers are always looking for ideas for exploring new areas or indeed for seeing familiar ones through new eyes. This book fills that need. It is delightful to look through, with lots of information which is interesting in its own right and adds immeasurably to the experience of the walks, and charming illustrations. Even if you aren't walking, the book is worth buying just for the historical, geological and geographical gems. The practical information is comprehensive and it is refreshing to find walking instructions which are accurate and helpful and never leave you stranded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 12 May 2010

Elaine Steane has written a super book about walking the 174 mile triangle of roman roads around the Cotswolds. It is full of the kind of practical information you need when planning walks, and loads of extracts from OS maps , which is so useful. But what makes it special is the way she incorporates her real experience into each section - and so many quirky and interesting little side comments. A lovely book - actually, you could just sit at home with your feet up and enjoy reading it without actually getting out and doing the real thing!

PS Very charming drawings too!

If you are already a fan of walking and walking books, you'll love this one - a new path, researched and designed by the author (a keen walker and cartographer's daughter), with enough walks to keep you happy for months. And full of details of Roman evidence along the way. If you are new to walking, or don't even want to leave the comfort of your armchair, there is enough detail in the book and it's beautiful illustrations to feast the imagination or even make you consider getting your boots on. A real gem of a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roman treats, 8 Nov 2010
This review is from: Roman Way (Walkabout) (Paperback)
We've walked most sections of this route now and have enjoyed the whole 'Roman' experience. There are some great sections on all 3 sides of the triangle - following Akeman street straight across the Cotswolds to Cirencester, Ermin way back across Wiltshire and West Berks to magnificent Silchester and back up again with Akeman street through Oxfordshire to Alcester. Sometimes you see the Roman 'agger', the road and its ditches, sometimes you see its shadow across a ploughed field or its clear sweep to a river crossing, and occasionally you walk along its green top or a tree lined track (rather than the less satisfying tarmac version, which is very often avoided). There are some fine river crossings, a few obvious well researched service areas (the equivalent of Travel lodge plus Macdonalds) and of course the sites of Roman villas, forts and towns along the way.

The book is attractively produced and Elaine Steane is clearly an enthusiast and great on detail, so that you don't miss out on things saxon or tudor or victorian or whatever on route. The notes on flora and fauna and hedgerows are fascinating and there's plenty of geographical, social and historical information if you want it - backed by magnificent drawings throughout The maps are very clear as are directions and welcome pub listings while travel links are excellent. You can go with friends and leave a car at each end of one of the sections, or you can catch a bus one way (the timetables are all online, and easily found from the details given) or book a taxi.

There's no need to follow the whole route: you can 'dip' into the walks from any part of central southern England since the route is accessible from a wide range of counties. Choose the ones that grab you. We had some great days walking and will be going back to a number of real beauties in the future. It's a superb walking route and a fascinating book that fits its purpose really well.
