1.0 out of 5 stars frankly very muddled, 28 Nov. 2005

This review is from: Studies in Golf Course Management: Confessions of a Chairman of Green No. 3 (Paperback)
The author claims he is just an enthusiastic amateur in this book, so he has collected quotes and opinions from experts.
He then DOESN'T go on to analyze these opinions. His viewpoint is that golfers should not expect to be able to play their course whenever they want despite the often large green fees they pay. Also that they don't understand that necessary maintenance is necessary.
He is in favour of a holistic approach to greenkeeping, tells us that to achieve sustainable courses golfers should not expect Open quality courses, and that golfers' views are very much secondary to those of the greenstaff.
There doesn't seem to be much to back up all the 'golfers think...' or 'expectations of golfers...'.
He used to be a Chairman of Green and he may be interested in the subject. This may be the cause of his attitude that others are interested in the subject of golf course management and that they (golfers) have taken a naive unrealistic standpoint. He fails to realize that golfers are not against golf course management and certainly aren't involved in some great struggle against it.
This golfer vs greenkeeper argument (golfer wrong, greenkeeper right) is the sole message of the book, despite the chapter headings.
The only parts which are not muddled come from contributors. The rest I'm afraid to say is of no use as either reference or as anecdotal light relief. If you are involved in the golfing industry in any way, either as player or in course management and you are researching golf course management, look elsewhere.
People who play golf don't just play golf.
