5.0 out of 5 stars kowloon walled city, 10 July 2007
By
This review is from: City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City (Paperback)
This excellent book is part hitory part biography and part pictorial. The history goes from the mists of time to 1994 when the city was demolished and its 30 thousand residents rehoused. The legal status of the city was never resolved. The biography section deals with the life stories and experiences in a very moving fashion of a nunber of residents. The pictorial section shows in excellent pictures many taken in very difficult lighting conditions the day to day activities in the city .My one criticism is the very poor map which is used when excellent ones were available.(as medical officer of health for Kowloon 1960-1964 Ican vouch for every thing which is recorded in this book)

I was so glad to find this book available on Amazon. I lived in HK and worked near the Kai Tak Airport. I remember wanting to explore Kowloon City but far too many people told me it was just way too dangerous. With hindsight, I regret not ever venturing any further than the perimeter of the Walled City. This book is truly a fantastic compilation of the Walled City's residents and their personal history which reflects China and Hong Kong's political and economic development as time went on. The photographs and texts are superb. I had so many opportunities to buy this book in Hong Kong when it was published but I just never got around to it.

At one time Kowloon Walled City was the most densely populated environment on the planet, and although it was in Hong Kong, the 6.5 acre site answered to the jurisdiction of neither Britain nor China. The essence was captured in this wonderful book of photography and text about the now-demolished city – including tales of opium divans, Triad activity, illegal tapping into electricity and water supplies, prostitution, abject poverty but uplifting community spirit – and the editors Greg Girard and Ian Lambot are trying to publish an all-new edition through kickstarter at:

It's an absolutely amazing book.

Excellent documentation of an incredible city. A testimony to human adaptability and perseverance. I wish I had seen Kowloon before they flattened it, but this book gives precious insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars a good view from the inside, 2 Dec. 2009
This review is from: City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City (Paperback)
i bought this book out of a particular interest. as a once-reader of some architectural writings, rem kolhaas theories, papers about urban sprawl and actually interested in urban-scape dynamics i want to own a book like this. i've also a friend of mine which is an illustrator and he needed somethins similar for work so we shared it. i think it's kind of a masterpiece both for the interviews and for the photos if you are vaguely interested in this strange social experiment that was kowloon walled city. the underlying thesis suggested by the authors was that the walled city existed as a self-sufficient and separate environment, a sort of city-state of its own, ruled by a self-imposed and precise set of rules. the rest is first-hand materials of the city landscape and life and you really get the idea of what could have beenl iving in that place. it's well written and photos are unique and th adopted perspective is interesting. a must if you are interested in such a topic.

ps. if you are looking for inspiration for cyberpunk settings, dystopian hive cities, overpopulated future societies or an arcology going wild you must buy it, you have found the right thing for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique book of the most extreme habitat ever on Earth, 15 Mar. 2007

An absolutely great report on the legandary Kowloon quarter in Hong Kong. Great pictures of the cramped living spaces and shops in the ever dark and wildly growing building comples that existed outside normal society.

This is probably the best documantary on Kowloon ever made. Only a pity that the interviews were made when most of the Kowloon was already deserted.
