I was initially disappointed with this book s I could not find Cookworthy or Fry or Bristol delft. I confess to mising the whole point of the book. It is not about the pottery or porcelain manufacturers we are familiar with, but the ones who have had little or no coverage.
That also means the book is not clogged up with half its volume on POuntneys. There is an amzing ammount of potters listed here considering the minor importance of Bristol as a city today. But from the 18th. century it was a major port in the UK, albeit mainly for exporting slaves, so was a massive commercial centre second only to London by some estimations.
The information garnered here comes mainly from street directories, and Bristol was the second after London to have one published, such was its commercial importance.
Another source was contemporary newspapers and advertising well represented here with some illustrations. All the criteria required for a mention in this book is a reference to pots or firing them so the book is a great reference book for studying china of the period, barring the usual suspects which I mentioned earlier.
This book will not be supplanted for a generation or until every published item is scanned into a computer and scanned for pot references. Bristol pottery research? All the work has been done for you here.
