5.0 out of 5 stars A good read
This is a great story of witchcraft. Certain rituals in the book are actual magick rituals used in high magick. This is a book that you don't want to put down, of great appeal to many people but especially to practicing witches and magicians because of the history behind the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars quite dissapointing
This book was dissapointing as it is more like a novel rather than a book you can learn from. This book was written in code by gerald gardner before witchcraft was made legal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful insight into Gerald Gardener's Wiccan World View, 11 May 2012

This review is from: High Magic's Aid (Kindle Edition)
Greatly enjoyed this unexpected treasure of a book and in retrospect im not sure why but I had anticipated a darker and more foreboding story and style. By contrast then, this book was very engagingly and brightly written, providing an interesting insight into Gerald Gardner's mythologized background of Modern Wicca as well as into the orientation views and attitudes of Mr.Gardener himself. It is said of Gerald Gardener that he was a light, cheery and inspirational character and this book portrays that authorial character well. I did however find the lengthy descriptions of High Magic ritual, particularly the lengthy lists of recited names in the invocations by Thur the 'Leech' aka local healer or Doctor in the tale, to be trying, but I imagine that such details may be of value to actual practitioners of this craft. With further reference to rites and magical practices herein detailed, these I found more accessible to a curious reader and again probably of value to solitary or new Wiccan's who seek guidance in their path. Be you a Wiccan, Pagan or just curious reader, this book is recommended as an enjoyable insight into a possible past world and as a view into the modern practices of Wicca which the author had established.
In perfect Love and Trust, Blessed Be ~

I bought this book after hearing it mentioned on a documentary, where it was described as the author's attempt to publish occult teachings disguised as fiction because witchcraft was still illegal at the time it was published. Whether that's an accurate description or not, I have no idea, but I'm glad I bought it. It is such a gripping tale, with fantasy, political satire, history (sort of) and just a really good story set in mediaeval England around the time of the Norman invasions.

This was an enjoyable story set around the time of Magna Carta, only disappointment was the ending which seemed a bit early and therefore weak.
