5.0 out of 5 stars Class teacher
I'm a year 3 teacher and we are learning about Victorians.

This book is perfect for the literacy side, especially as one of the main characters is about 8 years old. It has taught my class about social class, Victorian jobs, London and child rights. We are using it for settings and character description.

I bought this as a whole-class reader for my mixed Y3/Y4 class, and intend to use it next term. It seems better suited to lower KS2, with quite simple language and a simple storyline. 3.0 out of 5 stars Whole-class reader, 24 Aug. 2009
This review is from: Chimney Child: A Victorian Story (Key Stage Two historical fiction) (Paperback)
I bought this as a whole-class reader for my mixed Y3/Y4 class, and intend to use it next term. It seems better suited to lower KS2, with quite simple language and a simple storyline. It has possibilities for use in literacy too, for example describing story settings and characters. It shows the stark differences between two children during the Victorian era - one a poor chimney sweep and one a rich child, and introduces the theme of Dr Barnardo. It sounds a little contrived in some places, but I'm sure my class will enjoy the story nonetheless.

Two years on, and I've used this text with a mixed Year 3/4 class and a mixed Year 4/5/6 class. Needless to say, they LOVED it. It may seem simple and contrived to adult ears, but to primary-aged ears, it's gripping stuff!

Received so well by child
He has just done this at school and was amazed I found a book about it! Can recommend the book and others in the series...only draw back is they are a bit pricey and the boys complain there are more girls titles than boys!

I bought this book for my 8 year old niece who had been learning about Victorians at school and had been very enthusiastic about the Topic. She read it twice over 2 days and pronounced it 'fabulous'. The story seems to be full of appeal for that age group and at an appropriate level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my Year 3 children, 31 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Chimney Child: A Victorian Story (Key Stage Two historical fiction) (Paperback)
Used as a class read alongside the Victorians for 7 year olds. Simpler than Street Child for the younger children and a great way for them to discover more about life in Victorian times.

Used this for Year 4 English with link to History. Quite a good text for the middle to lower abilities, quite simple to understand with some good historical points to pick out
