This is a beautifully produced book with great stories and excellent illustrations. I gave it as gift to my godfather and he loved it. It explains the old original British regiments and how they evolved into the modern regiments which are currently in Afghanistan. Some of the characters in it and the stories of bravery are fantastic.

Eminently readable. The author wears his learning lightly. It's an informative book and the words are well complemented by appropriately selected photographs and illustrations. It deserves a place in the library of any military historian, though its appeal spreads wider than that.I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to the next installment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading., 28 July 2010
This review is from: Famous Regiments of the British Army: A Short Guide and Celebration: 1 (Hardcover)
This is a light but fascinating insight into many of the old regimeents and their successors the current regiments. Tradition and honour lie at the root of these remarkable bodies of men with their fine traditions linking them to the legions of the Roman Empire.
They are present in almost every moment of British history, certainly over the past 350 years.
The book is beautifully laid out with interesting pictures and fascinating and moving little inserts about heroes and characters from the regiments.
I look forward to the next volumes - a complete work would be a brilliant collectors piece which could be used for reference for a long time.
This is a slow burner which I think will stand the test of time.
More please.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, Interesting and Topical, 13 July 2009
This review is from: Famous Regiments of the British Army: A Short Guide and Celebration: 1 (Hardcover)
A delight. Very interesting book explaining the histories of all the regiments. I never knew for example that the Irish Guards were only founded after the Boer War. Its full of heroes and tales of derring do. Particularly good to read when our soldiers are continuing their proud traditions in Afghanistan. Unreservedly recommended.
