I am very pleased with this book. Not only does it contain information on the origional Gaston Leroux novel, but also how the musical version was made. 3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures and fabulous screenplay!, 28 Dec. 2004
This review is from: The "Phantom of the Opera": Film Companion (Paperback)
Paperback version. Pages: 144
I am very pleased with this book. Not only does it contain information on the origional Gaston Leroux novel, but also how the musical version was made. It has lots of interesting facts on the film, including sections on makeup, the music, the cast, set design etc. This book also includes interviews with both Lord Lloyd Webber and Joel Schumacher.
At the back of the book is also a copy of the film's screenplay. Giving readers a chance to read the lyrics to the songs and follow the dialogue and actions of the film. Not only this, but it also contains beautiful colour pictures throughout, (including a full page of 'the kiss' between Phantom and Christine, a must for Gerard Butler fans! ;))
Overall, the only things I felt were missing was a section on the process Gerard Butler went through to become the Phantom (makeup, prosthetics. etc) Although considering this, there were pictures of Micheal Crawford being 'made up'. Perhaps this will be on the DVD? I would have also liked to have read what inspired the actors to take part in the film, and their views on production etc.
Definately a must for avid fans of the film who can't wait for it to be released on DVD, and for people interested in the 'behind the scenes' info! 3/5

All in all, beautiful...

Full of detail about the history of the Phantom story, this book is a perfect accompaniment to the CD, and DVD when it finally comes out! I would have liked more info on the making of the film and the stars, but hopefully the DVD will have such extras on it. The main attraction of the book is the original screenplay at the back, which not only supplies all the lyrics to the songs (very handy when you like listening to the CD and belting out the songs while you're doing the ironing!), but has quite a few interesting details which didn't transfer into the final film. A good buy for fans of the film or the show.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 11 July 2005

This review is from: The "Phantom of the Opera": Film Companion (Paperback)
I expected this book to be amazing, to match with the film. However it was not so much a companion as a read-along with the film book. I was disappointed at the lack of information in it. Much of the information is simply copied from The Phantom of the Opera book by Edward Behr and the rest is either the screenplay or pictures. There were some interesting behind the scenes photos and some beautiful screen shots, but if you have seen the DVD and watched the extras, this wiill be nothing new. I was very disappointed with this book as I expected some photos that I had never seen and wanted to read about the selection process of the actors and what went on behind the scenes.

Excellent book as the title says, a film companion, in order to enjoy the master piece based in the famous Lloyd Webebr's musical. Some for to describe the product: interesting, story, dresses, songs, characters, other versions, past and present.
