As with almost every aspect of history, authors are forced to be selective with aspects they share in their writing to keep the readers entertained. Foss does this extremely well, giving a great account of the history of Rum from across the globe and drawing a number of laughs along the way. He cleverly links rum, the product, with the people who made, traded and drank it, painting an intricate picture of the social history surrounding the beverage. I found myself wanting to know more about the role of rum in the trade and navy of the British Empire, but I understand the need for the author to keep things moving. Foss leaves us with a thought provoking look at rum today and the future of the drink, as well as a great selection of rum-based food and drink recipes and links to further information. Highly recommend this as a solid introduction to the topic - but be warned - you will become addicted to the history of this fascinating drink.
