I downloaded samples of both this book and the Kenneth Silverman Begin Again: A Biography of John Cage, and ended up buying both. Because the Silverman book is enormous the sample is long enough to get you hooked. Instead this is a far shorter book, and the downloadable sample seems less impressive.

However for most readers this is the perfect biography of John Cage. It covers his life, his art, and gives a decent insight into the sort of person he was. Best of all it fires you up with an enthusiasm for Cage's restless creativity. This is a far more accessible tome than the Silverman, and misses out relatively little of note, and even seems stronger in certain areas.

Highly recommended, for anyone even remotely intrigued by Cage.
