4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, but not brilliant either
I really wanted to give this book 7/10 but as Amazon only have a maximum of 5 stars I rounded it up a bit. This book isn't bad, it has a lot of useful info on the different aspects of training for 100m, 200m, 400m and the relays. I really wanted to give this book 7/10 but as Amazon only have a maximum of 5 stars I rounded it up a bit. This book isn't bad, it has a lot of useful info on the different aspects of training for 100m, 200m, 400m and the relays. It explains the different types of training required at different times of the year and gives some example training components. It also explains the importance of weight training, flexibility and the technical aspects of the sport. The photos and explanations are clear. And yet...I feel the book falls between two stools. It isn't detailed enough to help those wanting to set up their own training plan, an experienced coach/runner may pick up a couple of nougets of info but not enough to justify the cost. A break down of a training year for a generic average club runner on a day-by-day level would have improved the book, as would some examples of weight training sessions. It can be argued that the author wanted to give general guidance so that training plans can be tailored to individual runners but it would have been nice to have some detailed examples (such as in Bowerman and Freemans Track and Field book). Overall, the book is worth reading but I would look for it in the library, or try to get it 2nd hand, rather than pay the full price for it.

For those who wants a book with an overview of sprint training it is a good publication. Mike Smith gives basic explanations och gives practical examples of training processes over the year.

Excellent overview of the training program that Mike Smith has used for many, many years with both world class athletes and lesser club athletes like myself. The book not only covers what the athlete needs to do in terms of training runs, recover periods etc., but also the reasoning and the circumstances behind a schedule in order to allow athletes to peak at the right time in the season and over time produce a sustained level of performance for a longer part of the season. There is something in this book for both coaches and athletes at all levels.
