I have used this for nearly all my sax pupils, and I love the tunes myself. Many of them are better than some in the Grade 4/5 book. Yes, the backing tracks allow only once through the solo, but that's because they are designed to accompany FOR the actual exam. That's good and much better than having the hassle of finding a pianist etc. Rockschool now include 'exam length' backing AND a full length version, which is great.
The downside is that there is one song that has now been removed due to 'copyright' problems; there is now a blank page there! Stupid of the publisher who is not allowing that song to be included, as they are losing out. Such an old song, so what a daft way to behave. Strange though as the CD still includes the backing track!

I was asked to buy this book by my saxophone teacher and I have been very pleased with it. I had a bit of sticker shock at the price - it's quite expensive for a relatively small number of pieces, but it is well worth it. The pieces are all very interesting and the backing tracks are outstandingly good. The alto sax part has both the head and guide tones for soloing, so the book is a good learning tool for both the melody and improvisation. As well as the alto sax lead part there is pull-out piano accompaniment, which would be very useful for playing with a pianist. My one gripe is that the accompaniments are too short and only allow for the head and one chorus of improvisation to be played.
