Mastering is the phase in the recording process after the final mix has been made, but before the actual full scale duplication (release). If you are interested into Mastering or you never had any real guidance while performing the job, this small book covers a lot of valuable information.
It discusses how to clean up the final mix of a song (removing clicks, repositioning pieces inside the song, after processing (EQ, FX) of a song, combining songs to a balanced album...etc). He doesn't forget to concentrate on the actual process of listing and judging to the results and how to make a good working environment. An additional chapter explains important details for making a production master tape/disc.
What I really liked about the book is that it is up to date (cd-r, hard disc editing) and that it covers many small details (audio carries, Test tones etc.). I would like not to forget to mention the fact that, The BASIC series all have small overlaps, because they cover close related area's. This makes them all independ from each other, so you don't need to buy the whole serie to have the complete information on a certain area. Of course you will have some information double if you several books from this serie. Although I didn't find this annoying.

The natural progression of most audio enginners is to cross over that fine line which separates sound engineers apart from Mastering engineers.Rule of thumb is to firstly read every thing you can get your hands on about the audio mastering.Sadly for me,Basic mastering did not acheive its goal. For almost half of the book basic mastering waffles on using audio enginnering terms. If you've ever done sound enginnering you'll be wondering when this guy is gonna get on to the mastering. The mastering sections are small and tell you very little about any thing to do with mastering at all.Any one expecting to get some good advice from this book won't.There is little advice on mastering tools and how to use them/no advice on the Art of mastering which is the prime question anyone would ask.Instead, basic Mastering goes into great detail about cd pressing plants and duplication.
.....If the question you want answered here is...."What exactly does a Mastering engineer do" then Basic Mastering is not for you...in a nut shell..............basic...the information in this book definately reflects its size which is slightly larger than a cigarette packet.

2.0 out of 5 stars not very helpfull........, 7 Dec 2004

I guess it might be handy to the complete novice but if you have any knowledge of audio engineering give this little book a very wide birth.
I found nothing in here to help with mastering audio.
The book should be called "Basic Recording".
