4.0 out of 5 stars Coffee table book?
This is a beautifully put together book that focuses on photos of and historical information on the following groups of plants: auriculas, hippeastrum, fritillary, nerine, narcissus, camellia, dahlia, tulip, rose, hellebore, carnation, iris, peony and waterlilly. The photos are beautiful (they are staged rather than photos of flowers in the garden). I found the...

The photos are beautiful (they are staged rather than photos of flowers in the garden). I found the historical information a little brief although it was interesting (each plant gets about 10 pages). There are references throughout the book to old engravings and pictures of each plant and I would have loved to see these included too. However overall it is a beautifully presented book and would make a gorgeous gift for a gardening friend!

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book, 31 Mar 2012
This review is from: Painterly Plants (Hardcover)
A gem of a book. Full of the most amazing images. Each chapter gives insight into how a particular plant came to enchant both gardeners and artists (and judging by Sabina Rüber's amazing photographs, they still do). Clare Foster weaves each plant's tale with a pitch perfect mix of historical and artistic reference, anecdote and fascinating details of their development. Done with a light touch and with a clear love of the subject, it was a pleasure to read and a feast for the eyes. In the best possible way, it left me wanting more. Painterly Plants II please.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beauty and knowledge combined., 28 Mar 2012
This review is from: Painterly Plants (Hardcover)
Beautifully written and backed up with stunning photography. I learnt so much from this book about the history of the featured plants and their mixture and effect upon the art world. It is written in a way to make it still interesting as well as informative. Not only it is great for my personal use but I have bought it for several others as it is such a beautiful and thoughtful gift.
