You'll love the black gryphon. Brave, honest, sarcastic and often arrogant, a master of the smart answer, here is a character to revel in, even if he does sometimes fly in with his tailfeathers on fire. A cast of vivid characters set against the background of war and trying to survive despite the odds. I just wish I'd met him earlier in his life. Read it. Satisfaction guaranteed.

The Black Gryphon is a great book to read. It will have you worrying and crying with the characters as they deal with a war of magic proportions.
You get a look at life within the world Mercedes Lackey creates that carries through to all the rest of the valdamar series and leaves you guessing at what is going to be revealed next.
A great book and well worth buying

I read this book previously, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I am now pleased to have it in hardback.

I have read many Mercedes Lackey books she gives great enjoyment with her storytelling please don't describe these books as for early teens I am 73 years old and certainly not in my second childhood

I bought 'The Black Gryphon' simply because I enjoyed another book Mercedes Lackey wrote with my favorite author, Anne McCaffery. There is no doubt in my mind that this incredible, touching, fast-paced novel is as good as (if not better than) any of Anne's fine work. The realistic characters are set in a complex, original, almost tangible world. It is impossible to avoid falling in love with the characters. I feel that The Black Gryphon is an incredible story, a brilliant combination of action and romance, fantasy and realism (with some politics thrown in for good measure.) During the final chapters I found it impossible to put down, despite the fact that it was 2am ! The climactic ending was well-chosen and wonderfully described. Mercedes Lackey is to be congradulated on a terrific novel.

This book from the very first page grabs your imagination and draws you into what is a truly fantastic world. Every character within the book is physically totally unlike anything on this planet but the mindset of the individuals cry out to you and you can identify with them and imagine your friends/enemies as having similar ideas. The action is non stop from beginning to end and I just did not want to put the book down

All the characters are well rounded in this pre-history of the Tayledras and Shin'a'in peoples that appear in the tales of Valdemar. Their backgrounds are intricate and woven into the story well, leaving a sense of poignancy as you read. Amberdrake's words of wisdom, Skan's throwawy comments all shed a new light on every-day life and leave you with the sense of hearing something profoundly true, even though this is fiction.
That said, Black Gryphon is one of my favourite fantasy novels, leaving me giggling or crying every time I re-read it. I love throwing slightly altered quotes into conversation such as Skandranon's "A tidy living place is a sure sign of a diseased mind". This book is an incredibly good read, and is very bitter-sweet. The only thing I can complain about is there is no history or description for the big villain, Ma'ar, before he became the villian. He is two-dimensional, in a world of colourful, very much three-dimensional characters.

An excellent host of characters who will win over your heart, make you laugh and make you cry all in the space of one book. Set in the tail end of a war against two sorcerers, the characters have to fight with whatever weapons they can to try and resist the inevitable loss that is looming over them... The book is incredible! You have to read it!

Having previously read books by Mercedes Lackey, I had some idea of what to expect. This book is a really good read, what might be termed a page-turner! The characterisations of the main players are excellent, from the Griffons to the healers and mages. It's a world that one could get lost in!!
