Applewood is an excellent sequel to Firelight and Woodsmoke, taking the Viahle family through a next set of generations and bringing to life the rural issues facing a country at war and the valiant efforts of the French during the wars, Well written from a very personal perspective, Michelet makes you really feel at one with the characters and the intertwining lives they lead throughout the book.I read this book on holiday and I was gripped from the first page.

This is the 2nd book, the first having dealt with the first world war and how it impacted on families in rural France. I live in France so was particularly interested in all the inter family disputes that occurr even today in small villages. The Trilogy is well worth a read for any Francophile, because it also explains what happened to the rural communities during the Vichy governments time in office and the resistance fighters who came from all walks of life. I would recommend starting with Firelight and Woodsmoke, then Applewood and finally the Scent of Herbs.

A wonderful story based in the are where the author grew up and still lives. Very evocative of the early years on a French farm in an isolated village. Powerfully emotional as regards family relationships and old enemies.

Compelling! When you read one of Claude Michelet's books you want to read the others immediately.
