5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to the walls
Well written and researched, this book makes an informative guide to the remaining Roman wall sections, and the much greater stretch of mediaeval city walls. Very readable, well displayed with maps and photographs - we have used it to walk around the city, looking out for the features mentioned. Most enjoyable!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great walls of Newcastle
I bought this book from a third party seller on Amazon brand new of course and although it has some interseting facts,
i found it so-so.
Mind you it would have helped if the book hadn't been faulty, 32 pages missing and 32 pages doubled up, so no wonder
it seems dull...LOL.
Have to admit though the seller was good enough to give a full refund as they...

5.0 out of 5 stars A splendid little book, 18 Dec 2012

As an avid reader of books on the history of Newcastle upon Tyne, my home town, I have struggled to relate the places of yesteryear with the locations of today. In fact, a year or so ago I went to the trouble of plotting the line of the old town walls onto a modern map so that I could refer to the latter as I encountered place-names in the text of a recent volume. In contrast, 'The Great Walls of Newcastle' incorporates a superior version of my own home-made mapping attempt inside the extended front cover. Moreover, it recounts the history of our great city solely in relation to the walls of the town, castle and earlier Roman constructions. This leaves the reader with a vivid overview of Newcastle’s history and an excellent visual aid to have at hand when exploring more detailed accounts. The authors and publisher are to be congratulated for producing this splendid little book.
