5.0 out of 5 stars Craft and social histoty combined., 27 April 2014
This review is from: Hook into the Past: The Story of Mat Making in North East England (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book ; I only wish it had been available when I was teaching 10 year olds as it covers family life in the first half of the 20th century and gives opportunities to learn simple but absorbing craft. So often, children have asked me why we bother with crafts since factory made alternatives are available and this book gives a true reason - life wasn't always about spending money, it was often a matter of saving money or being involved in a little bartering.
Though the text is accessible to young people, it also gives adults a fascinating insight of life in NE England in days gone by. The photos are wonderful, showing the women who were truly the salt of the earth in my childhood days. Long before the time wasting of day time television, women were always busy and productive, either out of necessity or because they wished to be. Many of these women may have lacked lengthy formal education but they could teach us a thing or two!
I walked on proddy rugs and hooky mats as a child but never made one. Now, I'm inspired and busy rescuing outgrown clothing from neighbouring children (the best for brights!) to make my first one.

This is such an interesting book that I couldn't put it down until I had finished it. Full of old photos showing a time when rag rugs were used, and interesting stories from people who remembered them being made and used.

The photographs in this book are fabulous, as is the history of rag rug making. Love reading about Ruggers on the other side of the pond.
