This review is from: Policeman in Africa (Hardcover)
A superb history of British Colonial West Africa just before, during and after World War 2. It is written by a former police officer who was faced with a most difficult situation. It was one that was impossible for him to succeed in. His superiors were indifferent to the seriousness of the political situation that had arisen. He used initiative and courage to avert a rebellion which would have caused a serious loss of life and enormous damage to material. He did what the Metropolitan Police in the UK manifestly failed to achieve in August 2012. He forstalled a serious riot that would have led to the death of many Colonial Office administrators.

In the process, three Ghanaian veterans of the campaign in Burma 1943-5 were shot dead by him. This was a tragedy. Unfortunately, anarchists and oportunistic looters had infiltrated the intended peaceful demonstration. He was a true professional who cared enormously for his difficult job with African subordinate policemen. As so often happens, it was expedient to move him away from the trouble that he both caused and averted and ultimately into premature retirement.
