This review is from: The Collected Poems of Robert Southwell (Paperback)
This complete collection of Southwell's work is the perfect companion to Sweeney's recent biography, 'Robert Southwell: Snow in Arcadia: Redrawing the English Lyric Landscape, 1586-1595'.

I had expected Sweeney's Introduction and Afterword to be an abridged version of her previous book, but although it certainly contains all the latest interpretations of Southwell's poetry it was obviously freshly written, with more of her sparklingly original metaphors illuminating every point.

Davidson's explanation of the Text of this edition and his Notes on the poems are equally enlightening and of benefit to the reader, whether new to Elizabethan poetry or an old hand.

This book is a must for any student of Southwell's poetry.
