2.0 out of 5 stars Not much of a companion, 3 Jun 2009

This review is from: The Peninsular War: The Complete Campanion to the Iberian Campaigns 1807-14 (Almanac) (Hardcover)
This book is not without some utility but extremely limited.

A large portion of this book is a precis of the state of the military of the nations involved. Unfortunately it is basically a rehash of what is usually in Chapter 1 of any battle or campaign account anyway so provides no companion function and is not specific to the peninsular either. There is a similarly useful list of the main players and a poor date line.

I would have liked some in depth OOB's (there are precisely 2!) and some analysis of troops who actuially fought in the peninsular (how the initial French conscripts fared poorly requiring the vetrans to be sent there etc.) and some evelotion of higher formations but there is none of this.

Can't recall what else is in it now as it was of little interest but my advice would be don't bother; it will not enhance the experience of reading about the peninsular to any great degree and is seriously over priced. Shame as Haythornthwaite makes a good contribution elsewhere
