5.0 out of 5 stars The best is saved until last

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so good as the first book Sassinak
Not so good as the first book Sassinak. I really wanted to see some planet pirates get their comeuppance! However it was an enjoyable read.

This review is from: Generation Warriors: Book 2: Planet Pirates Series (Paperback)
This book is a well-woven tale and brings together the different threads of the two previous novels. The whole series is different from "normal" Anne McCaffrey and is almost entirely without the author's usual fantasy element. It's far more in the space-travel vein, and the military theme is refreshingly presented, particularly in this final book. There's detective work, intrigue, space battles, politics and power struggles in this book. Anne McCaffrey is a gifted author and it's good to read this less usual type of material from her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 19 April 2010
This review is from: Generation Warriors: Book 2: Planet Pirates Series (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I have been reading the series from enjoying Elizabeth Moon's book series (Vatta's War series and the Serrano series - both of which are excellent) and the Planet Pirates was my first Anne McCaffrey experience. The book runs at a good pace (not a continual rush of events but with adequate speed to explore ideas yet maintaining excitement).

One thing I enjoy about the Elizabeth Moon/Anne McCaffrey (and with Jody Lynn Nye in the 2nd book of the series) is that each thread of the story is given adequate time and you are not continually switching between threads every few pages. Some other authors can be a bit like watching TV with a bored child with an interesting remote control - switching threads every few pages. Not so with these books which is a relief.

This is a good read from McCaffrey, an example of what I would call Military Science Fiction, with some political aspects, it is best read as part of the series, as these books contain details of the same incidents from the viewpoints of different characters, an interesting literary device that I have never read before.

The final book of the series was full of action, and carried three different character streams well. It led to the final exciting action scene with lots of sub plot, although there were one or two loose ends: whay did Sasenak go into a trap so easily? Who was the person killed when she met him?. It still makes gripping reading, and was well written.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best McCaffery book but....., 27 Dec 2000
This review is from: Generation Warriors: Book 2: Planet Pirates Series (Paperback)
Having been through the "Dragon Riders", "Tower & Hives" and "Crystal Singer" sets, I found the 3rd "Planet Pirates" book a bit of a let down. Generation Warriors - Continues the story of Sassinak, once taken from her home planet as a slave now an FSP Cruiser Captain. This story skips backwards and forwards between Sassinak and Lunzie never giving enough time to either ones story or plot. A very disappointing McCaffery book.
