Personally I found the exhibition quite electrifying. Some of the canvases, particularly the religious ones, sent a real chill up my spine. The book contains very informative and accessible scholarly essays on subjects ranging from Velazquez's life to the more specialized and local topic of the history of British acquisition of his works. As a catalogue it is not only very full - each work has a detailed provenance and commentary which manages to balance description with pondering, all the paintings are reproduced nice and large. As far as my limited experience is concerned, this defies convention! So forget the postcards and get this if you liked as many of the paintings you saw as I do.
