This book is such a great idea, executed brilliantly: There are nine excellent designs here, reproduced four times each - each one has the beginnings of a fun drawing, which has to be completed - thumbprint birds sitting on a leafy branch, for example. The accompanying text says "draw the rest of the birds; some of them are hiding". The pages are slightly bigger than A4 size, and the designs are charming. Each one doubles up as a placemat when it is finished.
I'm tempted to buy a laminater to give them a longer life, because the end results are charming.
This is such a good way to get children instantly inspired to draw - one thing I always hated about having to draw things when I was a little kid was that they didn't look realistic, and I often wasn't happy with what it looked like at the start - I can see how these tasks release my son from that difficult 'starting' phase; he loves to do them, and the advantage of having the same design duplicated four times is that all the children at the table can do the same ones at the same time if they want.
The author's books in this 'Let's Make...' series are a phenomenon: they really do make it easy to encourage kids into art and make it fun again, which is what it should be all about. They are imaginative and fun, and rather unique in their own way - totally recommended!
