4.0 out of 5 stars From Metropolis to Raging Bull: a clever conceit in presenting the evolution of movie making, 27 Jun. 2012
This review is from: 100 Ideas that Changed Film (Paperback)
Any title of this sort inevitably raises the question "yes, but whose ideas?" In this case we are in the accomplished hands of film critic David Parkinson who, using the conceit of 100 ideas that changed film, provides 100 well-illustrated narratives through the ebb and flow of movie making since its start, in a concise and informative book. Films are consequently juxtapositioned in ways that you would not have expected. Take 'Idea No.33 - In-camera Effects', for example. The Great Train Robbery (1903), Metropolis (1926), The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Third Man (1949), Raging Bull (1980) and the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001 - 2003) are pulled together to exemplify techniques from the artistry of shutter shifts to use of matte paintings - in one succinct story. Helpfully, there is a glossary and full index. I defy any film enthusiast to say they have already seen all the films cited in this book. And this is why it succeeds: the next time you want to hire/watch a DVD, you can refer to 100 Ideas to choose a movie whose significance in the arc of film-making you will also be able to appreciate. Great idea. Great book. And a great gift for the armchair "expert". Such as me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Informative!, 24 Jan. 2013

This review is from: 100 Ideas that Changed Film (Paperback)
I bought this book as a birthday present, but when I saw it couldn't resist flicking through the pages - and I will definitely ask to borrow it afterwards! The films which Parkinson names range from old classics to modern creations, and it's interesting to see how film has developed over the years and the meanings within them. It doesn't seem too heavy either, as each chapter is only a few pages long so it looks as if you can gather quite a lot of ideas and information, but without having to dedicate a long time to investigating the various genres and techniques, etc. It seems ideal and fun for a film fan, and I am sure it will be received with genuine pleasure!

... anyone interested in film. My film student daughter thought this was a brilliant and concise record of all those moments that move the history of film on. One to a page, good photography, and nice quality paper. It's not in depth, but it doesn't claim to be.
