This review is from: How to Use Images (Portfolio Skills) (Paperback)
This good-sized book (just shy of A4 size and just shy of 200 pages) provides a practical, if simplistic, introduction to using images - both for print and online. It makes an excellent reference and will be useful to graphic design students and people who work with/use images in their communications/marketing, but don't have in-depth knowledge of images. It provides an overview of how to select and use images, and it's nice to see a reference book that doesn't need to be read sequentially - you can, of course, do this; but it's also been written in a way that you can dip in and out of as you need.

The book covers:

1. A brief history of images
2. Who images are aimed at
3. When and how they are used
4. Selecting images
5. How to structure a design
6. Composition
7. Communication
8. Using colour
9. Image potential
10. Production

Each topic is succinctly covered in easy-to-read and plain language - you'll get a basic understanding of topics such as where to position an image on a page, grid systems, replacing text, visual continuity; but I'm only touching on what the book covers. Case studies are provided throughout the book, which provide a nice break from the main content. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter to help you get thinking about what you've just read (the exercises are presented in a tacky Blue Peter style, and the book probably could have done without them).

My only issues with the book are that (1) the paper quality isn't great, which means the images used within the book don't really come to life. (2) Also the text doesn't contract with the page, which makes it difficult to read at times - the image captions in particular are written in a legal-style small print that can barely be made out.

Otherwise, a very good reference book.
