This review is from: Robert Brownjohn: Sex and Typography: 1925-1970 Life and Work (Hardcover)
Having bought this book through Amazon a couple of weeks back, I've now been sent a standard 'review this book' follow up request. Normally I'd just bin it but so important was Brownjohn in revolutionising the creative aspect of British (nay, global) design and advertising that I thought I'd better write something.

Despite his all too brief career, his contribution was massive. At a time when advertising was being done by retired army types, and design by flowery commercial artistes, Brownjohn almost single-handedly dragged these vocations kicking and screaming into the realms of ideas thinking. This wonderful book describes how he went about this task and shows his many inspired solutions. Not only should it be on the shelves of every art school library but it should also be compulsory reading for anyone entering the creative industry.

Besides documenting his life and work, this book also provides a fascinating insight into the 'swinging' London of the late '60s and includes quotes from the many creatives and celebrities who knew Brownjohn during this period, including his good buddy and fellow trailblazer Bob Gill.

A ripping yarn and a compulsive read. Buy it.
