5.0 out of 5 stars The best art book on the market
This is quite different from the usual "how to paint" books where the author gives examples of different subjects and/or techniques and encourages the reader to do something similar. 3.0 out of 5 stars Colour - A workshop for artists and designers
I bought this book to use as part of my teaching. The book wasn't what I was expecting. It runs through colour theroy in a comprehensive way and also offers ' Assignments' based on a topic. I.e Proportional colour, which I found useful. Its also a nice book to read with clear illustrations and the pages are not over loaded with information.

This is quite different from the usual "how to paint" books where the author gives examples of different subjects and/or techniques and encourages the reader to do something similar. This book launches the reader into their own investigation into colour, giving quite specific guidelines on how to complete assigments, but at the same time leaving the reader complete freedom to do them in his/her own style.

It is a beautifully produced book with just the right amount of information on each page; examples given are by the author's own students and are good enough to give one lots of ideas, but not so brilliant that the task seems impossible! I have only done the first assignment so far, which develops one's awareness of greys, muted colours and prismatic colours, but already I have learnt a huge amount about the way colours work. The exercises are based on the ideas of Josef Albers who was connected with the Bauhaus, and look in detail at the ways colours relate to each other.

This is a book in a million and should be required reading for all art and design students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid book, 9 May 2010
This review is from: Colour: A Workshop for Artists and Designers (Paperback)
This book is really fantastic if you are interested in colour and its use in painting. I have been steadily working my way through the projects and still have a long way to go. Can't recommend it highly enough - prepare to be surprised and stimulated.

Some of the assignments are useful but its aimed at higher level students. It offers theroy of colour and then an assignment based on the theroy which sounds good in principal but its not for younger students definetly 16 plus.
