This review is from: Panzerkampfwagen III Medium Tank (Osprey New Vanguard) (Paperback)
Osprey's titles tend to vary in quality and this is one of the more disappointing. Technical detail is patchy - for example, the section on armour consists of a couple of quotes from British reports mainly criticising the welding. There is no analysis or breakdown of the armour arrangements or a comparison with the armour plate used by other countries. Some good detail on automotive arrangements is present, but the section on gunnery and optical is once again free of any useful analysis. The sighting arrangements are described as 'more complicated' than those on British tanks, but whether this was a good or bad thing is not stated - the extent to which the German's superior gunsights might have contributed to their performance in battle is a subject which is ignored here. Most disappointing is the 'Panzer III In Action' section which is little more than a series of potted histories of the various campaigns, in which the armoured actions are highlighted only in the most general way. Details of the performance of the various Panzer III marks, and the strengths and weaknesses exhibited, is largely absent. Comparison of the Panzer III with its main opponents is at the most basic level (where present at all) and is insufficient for a specialist publication.
Some effort has been made to choose photos not previously seen, but many of these are so small in size as to be of little use. As usual, the saving grace is the selection of colour plates in the middle of the book which are of the usual high standard.
Perhaps it is time that books such as this were offered to German writers who can carry out the research needed in the appropriate German archives. Overall this a is a weak effort and cannot be recommended.
