This is a useful book both for the history, but also because you can see where many of the problems of South Africa stem from. The stubborness of the Boers who wished to run their own affairs including keeping slaves up against the desire of the British to run things their way with the africans in the middle. The failure of the British to retain control of the Boer states in the first Anglos Boer War was directly due to imperial overstretch and an unwillingness to bring the necessary resources to bear. It must be considered however, that at this time period, the boers relations with the africans was of more importance, and that tale is a grim one.
As with all ospreys, this is a thumbnail sketch. It is however a very useful one. It may stand on its own, or you may use it as a base for more research. Which ever you choose, enjoy.
