4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Osprey Offering - Now Possibly Slightly Dated, 23 April 2009

This review is from: The English Longbowman, 1330-1515 (Warrior) (Paperback)
All the virtues of the Osprey series are on display here. The text is clear and concise and the illustrations, both contemporary and from historical sources, are plentiful, appropriate and useful. If you have any of their other books you should know what you are getting.

However, I suspect that, were it to be revised today, the author would be able to speak with rather greater confidence about the findings from the bows recovered from the Mary Rose. These have revealed a great deal about actual warbows (admittedly from the period just after the book stops).

Overall, recommended.

The perfect gift for all history enthusiasts is THE ROMA VICTRIX WINE BEAKERCalix Imperium, Roma Victrix Pewter wine beaker
Another great offering from Osprey and a great narrative from Clive Bartlett. Considering the length of the booklet Bartlett packs in an enormous amount of information.

The very informative text is backed up with superb artwork by Gerry Embleton , highly recommended.

I bought this as a first book on English bowmen and I think it fits the bill really well. It covers the subject well without any waffle and the illustrations would provide a good basis for a re-enactment costume and equipment if required.

Interesting, if somewhat basic history. Perhaps best suited to an A level standard student. Never the less well worth reading, it will stay on the bookshelf.

A thoroughly detailed account of the harsh lives lived by my forebears when to be English meant more than claiming benefits or acquiring a British passport.
