5.0 out of 5 stars A hard-hitting, showing the reality of life., 7 Oct 2000
This review is from: Kes (NHB Modern Plays) (Paperback)
A story about a 15 year old boy, from a very poor background and broken home, which shows the reality and harshness of life.
Billy (the main character) has to learn about life the hard way, through bullies at school, (not just other pupils) and a family who just doesn't care.
He finds comfort in one thing, a kestrel named Kes. He trained her from a fledgling, and it is the only thing he cares about. His life revolves around her, and when he is with her, his troubles disappear...
A great book, which is hard to put down. The relationship between the reader and Billy, Barry Hines creates is amazing. An excelent choice for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Play of Kes, 25 April 2014

This review is from: Kes (NHB Modern Plays) (Paperback)
Used play to work with students of lower ability in school, whilst reading the novel. interjected more fun and less daunting than reading lots of prose all the time in class. Pupil also engaged their own understanding of the characters in their portrayal of them.

I am playing Billy in a production in the local theatre and I must say that this script has helped me enormously. Its clear and presentable which makes it easier for the actors or readers to follow it.

I recommend it to anyone who is doing this play.

Brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent play based on the novel, 14 April 2001
By A Customer
Allan Stronach has done Barry Hines proud in the writing of The Play of Kes , it is an excellent depiction of the life that a boy would live in the mine working 60s, the play brings you very close to Billy Casper and his kestrel. This great play does not have any trouble bringing a tear to the audiences eye at the end of the play.
