4.0 out of 5 stars A good, advanced grammar book with exercises
I take issue with the review here which says this book is designed to "ease" English-speakers into learning Russian. It doesn't, and it clearly isn't designed to - it is designed for students who already have a sound basic knowledge of the language, and is normally used as a textbook for a first year post-A level Russian course (or second year ab initio Russian course)...

2.0 out of 5 stars as Wade's book is better formatted and gives a better balance between the rule ...
If you are thinking of getting a Russian grammar book, my recommendation is Terence Wade's 'A comprehensive Russian grammar', as Wade's book is better formatted and gives a better balance between the rule and the inevitable exceptions (and has an accompanying exercise book with answers). In this book you can easily not see the wood for the trees and there are no answers...

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, advanced grammar book with exercises, 13 Aug 2008
This review is from: Modern Russian: An Advanced Grammar Course (Russian Studies) (Paperback)
I take issue with the review here which says this book is designed to "ease" English-speakers into learning Russian. It doesn't, and it clearly isn't designed to - it is designed for students who already have a sound basic knowledge of the language, and is normally used as a textbook for a first year post-A level Russian course (or second year ab initio Russian course). It is a thorough treatment of all the pertinent points of Russian grammar that are often neglected by beginners (such as case endings and declension irregularities), and deals with lots of the advanced issues as well. As has been mentioned, it doesn't have a flash presentation, but it does contain copious exercises on the lessons (all be it without an answer key in the back). Much easier to digest than, say, Wade's 'A Comprehensive Russian Grammar'.

5.0 out of 5 stars must have for all Russian students, 8 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Russian: An Advanced Grammar Course (Russian Studies) (Paperback)
If your serious about learning Russian this is a must buy. Offord doesnt beat about the bush with flash presentation or colour coded layouts, he simply lays out the entire grammar structure of the language, complete with exceptions, examples, and excellent explanations. As a learning tool and a reference I cannot recommend this book more highly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good in many respects, but presentation is poor, 7 Jan 2008

This review is from: Modern Russian: An Advanced Grammar Course (Russian Studies) (Paperback)
This is my Russian textbook at the University of Nottingham. It has all you'd want of it - grammar is explained in great detail and comprehensively and there are long, decent sets of exercises at the end of each chapter. However, a word of warning. The book has such poor presentation that you have to be very keen and patient to really get the best use out of it. It reminds me of seeing my grandma's textbooks for learning English in the 1940s. It also goes into so much detail that it's difficult to try and summarise the contents into something easier to learn. Technically, however, it has everything it should so for a serious student of Russian it's ideal.

This review is from: Modern Russian: An Advanced Grammar Course (Russian Studies) (Paperback)
It is a very complete grammar course. The author goes deep into the rules and some exercices are given in order to work on different subjects.
I would recommend this book as it summarizes the essential of the difficulties in russian.

1.0 out of 5 stars poorly given explanations, 11 April 2008
This review is from: Modern Russian: An Advanced Grammar Course (Russian Studies) (Paperback)
This book is an ""attempt" to ease English students in their battle to learn Russian. Unfortunatelt the bok does NOT ease, but tease.
Enjoy your battle
