3.0 out of 5 stars Not A Turkish Delight!, 26 Oct 2012

I bought this book after reading about it in a book review magazine, (it was on the "summer reading" list of one of the reviewers). I think the title misleads in that only a small proportion of the letters were actually from Turkey, and those are extremely interesting. The rest were written on the journey to and from that country, and are a bit of a curate's egg. There are indeed a few enlightening and informative passages, but I felt many merely served as a vehicle for the opinions and prejudices of the writer, whilst offering little to hold a modern reader's attention. The introduction to the book was far too long winded, but then if that had been edited of its padding, and you discount the copious notes and indexes at the end, (necessary in the academic world I'm sure, but boring and pointless for the casual reader), then what is left are slim pickings indeed.

In these days of so much bad press concerning the clothing traditions of other cultures, it is a breath of fresh air to read Lady Wortley's take on cultural differences. She has great respect for the cultures she writes about, but still manages to criticize aspects of those cultures in a truly amusing way.

The great shame about MWM,s letters is that so many were destroyed by her family a trully great letter writer and remarkable talent her humanity just shines through the World needs more like her. Although there are a few books that cover MWM the best way to learn about her is through her own writing dont pass this one by!
