5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best editions available., 24 Sept. 1999
This review is from: Meditations (Wordsworth Classics of World Literature) (Paperback)
A great edition of a timeless classic. The translation is clear and the introduction is informative. A great read, for philosophers and non-philosophers alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars The main man, 31 Jan. 2010
This review is from: Meditations (Wordsworth Classics of World Literature) (Paperback)
This is one of the greatest books I have read. Marcus is trying to be a better person. in a never ending quest to become a good, honest person while having to fullfil the role as Emperor. It is one of the best books I have read. Forget the present day faiths where we worship dead people, the idea that god will forgive all your sins. Read this and become a better person in this life and make the world a better place now, not in some ficticious afterlife. The guy was right!

I found this translation very readable, and the philosophy expressed surprisingly modern, well, 20th century anyway thought he 21st century is so much more self-centred.

Hu Jintao (I think) put me onto this book as one of the two he always likes to carry when travelling, and now I understand why. The ancient Greek Stoic ethos has a lot in common with the religion-free parts of Zen.

If you have, like most of us, times of confusion, doubt & uncertainty in your life try dipping into Meditations. Just let the book fall open & begin to read. I find it almost prescient in what it tells me. It is so uplifting, yet so commonsensical (to me). We never seem to be able to see clearly for ourselves & need inspiration.. Marcus Aurelius will give that to you.
