Most of the walking I've done up to now has been on local, readily known routes which is OK but predictable. Since reading this book and procuring various OS maps and a compass we now have the confidence to try lesser known areas which is much more enjoyable.
The book is written in an amiable style with some humorous anecdotes in places in well thought out chapters such that if there is a topic that needs revisiting, you can find it easily. The illustrations are also clear and helpful. For the first time reader, topics are introduced in a logical chapter order to build knowledge.
I regularly refer to this book if I want to brush up on my knowledge and have always found it a useful and enjoyable read.
There are also more advanced sections on timing and pacing and good general advice on safety aspects such as route cards.
I would thoroughly recommend this book.
