5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Gold For Preachers, 6 May 2012

I wish such a book had been available to me when I began my ministry. R T Kendall is quite right in his foreword that it should be in every theological seminary. I have read many of the Yale Lectures and Warwick Lectures on preaching, many of them valuable and treasured, giving out riches, but there is not one of them like this. Each of them contains the thoughts on the subject of one person. This is a library on preaching, 600 pages long, a rich seam of pure gold. Apart from the superstars of the pulpit who are few, most preachers have strengths and weaknesses. And many strain weekly to keep up with the demands made on the minister and to produce good food for the congregation week in and out. It is a demanding challenge which most people in the pew do not understand. This book will challenge preachers in the use of their strengths and encourage and help them in the areas of weakness. The Product Description gives enough details of the contents of the book, so I shall not repeat that in this review. What do I like in it? I like the broad range of topics, the broad range of denominations from which the speakers come, the faithfulness to God's Word, the emphasis on the importance of preaching, the recognition of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in anointing the preacher and applying the preached word. It has history, exposition, humour, encouragement, challenge, humility, instruction. It should be required reading for every preacher starting out in ministry and it will make the experienced person review their ministry and consider new emphases and methods. You will not agree with everything in it, but there is much you will gain from it. I consider this to be the best book in its field - pure gold for preachers.

This review is from: Preach the Word!: The Call and Challenge of Preaching Today (Hardcover)
Are you a preacher? Think you know everything about preaching?!

This is a great volume of work, collecting together chapters from);

Greg Haslam (Essential Ingredients of Popular Preaching)
John Stott (The Paradoxes of Preaching)
Joel Edwards (Preaching that Unites the Streams)
Chris Wright (Preaching from Narrative) (Preaching Old Testament Law)
Terry Virgo (Apostolic Preaching)
J John (Evangelistic Preaching)
Michael Ramsden (Apologetics and Preaching)
Mark Stibbe (Using Movies in Preaching)
Doug Williams (Pentecostal and Black Preaching)
Steve Brady (Preaching Apocalyptics)

Colin Dye (Preaching for a Verdict and Response)
Jeff Lucas (Thirteen things I Wish I had Known About Preaching)

And that's just a sample of the 49 chapters - all easily accessible and readable, with practical and spiritual tips.

I was given this a gift (I'm a Minister) and I've found it to be excellent.

Well worth the investment for yourself or as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Preacher's Reference Book, 8 Nov 2013

This review is from: Preach the Word!: The Call and Challenge of Preaching Today (Hardcover)
This is an outstanding work, and should be on the bookshelf of anyone who is engaged in preaching the Word of God. Edited by Greg Haslam, its 600+ pages contain articles by many of the best known, and Spirit-led preachers, in the United Kingdom, and elsewhere. The practice of preaching, with all its expected and unexpected challenges and problems - some spiritual, some hilariously technical! - are discussed. However, the common theme of all the writings is the successful delivery of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the contributors are all unashamedly evangelical in style, and Bible-based in their theology. This is not a book that you will want to read from cover to cover, but you will be surprised how often you will want to refer to it. If you are a newcomer to preaching, or have been in pulpits for more years than you can remember, you will benefit from this volume. I can thoroughly recommend it.
