3.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing yet strangely disappointing.
There is no doubt that among a generation of fine jockeys: Carson. Cauthen, Breasley, Williamson, Starkey, Mercer, Eddery and so on, Lester Piggott reigned supreme. His record speaks for itself and is, in any event, chronicled in detail from 1948-1994 at the end of this autobiography.

What emerges here is largely a blow by blow account of the great man's triumphs in the saddle and a few of the disasters, including rather perfunctory treatment of his episode with the law. From a generations-long racing background destiny seemed to have marked out LP for his vocation, and in terms of dedication that is very much what it was. The subject of the book comes across as obsessive, ruthless in his pursuit of success and self-absorbed. There seems little depth of interest in his fellow jockeys and trainers etc., just occasional asides and references to his " good friend" - a particular rider or owner, but nothing of what he valued in other people other than their offering him a route to more winners and more money. In short he remains an enigma, egocentric and little given to loyalty. How much this is the man, how much the world in which he thrived for so long and how much the hand of a ghost writer, or even simple reticence it is hard to say. Shortly I shall start on Dick Francis' biography of Lester Piggott. Perhaps more will be revealed there.
