This review is from: Later (Paperback)
As the title implies this collection continues from the volume 'Deep Field' in which the poet tenderly travelled alongside his father through the lingering stages of dementia. In the first part of Later we learn of his father's eventual death treated with a loving dignity. The language achieves precision through a sequence of hesitations through which the poet keeps testing what he might find to say in the throes of his caring, while uncertain about his father's current and past experiences.
Through the second part of the book he takes up a life beyond that intense relationship. 'Barry Island with Dante and ducks' celebrates the privilege of sharing in a grandchild's world.
In short this is another impressive volume from Philip Gross.
