4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in parts.........., 14 July 2005

I read this book some time ago and found it to be an excellent read at the time. Looking back, its doom laden premonitions for the future of rugby seem a little over-dramatic. However, the final few chapters on the Lion stour of New Zealand in 1993 are simply wonderful. No better book has been written on a rugby tour than this. The match reports and insights into the tour are manna from heaven for any rugby fan. As a result, this book should take its rightful place alongside Clem Thomas's Hostory of the British Lions in any good sporting book collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Starts slow but well worth reading, 21 Mar 2010

As already stated, the chapter devoted to the then possible future of rugby union going professional, is obviously no longer relevant. Neither are the complaints of the now discontinued "use it or lose it" law.

Indeed the first few chapters are hard going, but I'm glad I stuck with it. The chapter on South Africa, who had only just been allowed to play internationals again after the apartheid sanctions, was very interesting.

And then you get to the final third of the book, the reporting of the 1993 Lions tour in New Zealand. I found this to be well written, giving a well humoured insight into the tour and I enjoyed remembering all those great names at the height of their careers (Jeremy Guscott, Ieuan Evans, Gavin Hastings to name a few).

All in all, I'd recommend this to anyone that has an interest in rugby.
