This is my number 1 buy of the year. I can't praise this book highly enough.

1.0 out of 5 stars A book for beginners in textiles
Very disappointed with this book. Too much very basic information which is common sense.
Would not have bought this book had I previewed it.

This is my number 1 buy of the year. I can't praise this book highly enough.

Helen Parrott, trained earlier on as a geographer and there is something very interesting about the perspective of textile artists who have a background in the physical sciences.

The marks are drawn, pressed or stitched onto all sorts of media - wall paper, fabrics, etc; they are ostensibly simple but the effects are nothing less than astonishing. Less is definitely more.

The whole book is lovely to hold like many new textile books at the moment - the pictures and illustrations are clear and very helpful. Helen Parrott takes the reader through observing and identifying line and form in the world of reality and gives lots of ideas on how to use that collection of visual knowledge in the design process.

It really is a book I have been waiting for.

Fantastic. Really helped me understand the whole purpose of making a mark. I have done many mark making sessions, but never clearly got it".

These marks are made by stitches used to create a variety of textures and patterns in ways I I have never thought of.
I found trying out the various techniques led me on to experiment with patterns of my own. This is a very inspiring book

Inspirational & new. Perhaps because of the author's round about way into textile art she approaches in a way that is captivating. I love the photography, her journey & the way she encourages observation - I shall look out for further books with anticipated pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars INSPIRING BOOK, 6 Dec. 2013

Exciting for anyone who needs encouragement to start creating....anyone
who tends to be too bothered about doing things 'properly'.
This book encourages you to make marks and develop and just enjoy the
process.
There are approaches in this book which I can explore with my grandchildren because
looking at pattern, shape and texture is basic to us from early childhood onwards...but
so often this way of looking at our surroundings is lost.
The book would be great for anyone wanting visual stimulation, from newcomers to skilled
creators, and not just in Textile Art.
A well-produced book.

If you are interested in stitch and design this is a very interesting book. I don't think it's the ideal book for a beginner but, for anyone already hooked, it's a fascinating look at mark-making for the would-be textile artist. There are lots of useful hints and a good look at the processes Helen uses in her own work.

I love this book, I first came across it when one of the members of our textile group showed us her copy. I had to get one! Now I keep delving into it and its helped me enormously with my current project.

I really enjoyed reading Helen Parrott's book. It's well written and illustrated and contains lots of essential information for artists who are just starting their Textile Art journey. I admit I expected a bit more, probably through my own misunderstanding of what the book offered. 'A bit more' means going beyond the very basic first steps in mark-making. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book to all new textile artists and even to painters, etc. I'm glad I bought it and I will probably go back to it from time to time. A four-star rating in this case means 'I really like it'.
