4.0 out of 5 stars Informative, amusing, poignant (and other rejected titles for Joy Division albums)
Here we have the first memoir of Joy Division by someone who was actually in the group, which, given their importance and achievements, should be greeted with huge enthusiasm by anyone who appreciates the group's work or with an interest in the post-punk era. Sadly, it's been greeted with accusations of "rip-off" or "cash in" in some circles, pathetic knee-jerk reactions...

3.0 out of 5 stars one for the fans I think...
It has to be said that Hook's revisionist take on the Joy Division story is refreshing. Don't be misled by the typically moribund image on the cover - this is basically Hooky and the boys go mad across Europe. All the purported sturm and drang of the Ian Curtis story is brought down to earth with the sound of pint glasses thumping on bars. And then there's the fights. And...

4.0 out of 5 stars Should have been called Hindsight, 30 May 2013

Did enjoy it. Read a lot on Joy Division and it is good to read the story from someone who was there.
Find Hooky a bit contradictory in places from previous interviews either in the film that was made a couple of years ago or other things I've seen or read.
Regardless of this it is a good read and very funny in places and good to hear about the other side of Ian Curtis who mucked about with his mates.
Hooky does appear to open up and does appear to have slot of guilt and regret on the death of his mate.

Little short I thought, but then again, the author states that once Ian had gone, the group was effectively over, so the history o f2f the band, and the book itself, apart from any appendices and notes comes to a natural conclusion.

I prefer his other book about his misadventures with the Hacienda to be honest but for anyone interested in the group it's a good read, nothing more hence the 3 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest, Frank & Funny, 13 Feb 2013

Honest, frank and funny. If its the band (Joy Division), music (Punk/Post Punk/New Wave) or era (Late70's early 80's) you want to learn about then read this. If you want to be in a band it may inspire you, it may put you off!! I went to one of the book readings for this where Mr Hook was very good. He seemed in life, as with the book, to be quite open and honest without avoiding issues in a very self deprecating manner.

It is is different to a lot others in this style. It's not a biography as such. It clarifies details and dispels myths about the band from the viewpoint (as he vehemently expresses on the cover) of someone who was there and was part of the story that unfolded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read through Hooky's eyes, 10 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Peter Hook was there, that's why his story is one which needed to be told and cements his name along with Joy division in the musical history books. Hook's own experiences within the band, his relationship with Barney & feelings towards Curtis are all here & more...enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and thoughtful ..., 26 Jan 2013

Peter Hook writes with both passion and great empathy when describing the early years of Joy Division. This is one of those that is almost impossible to put down once you start reading. If you're interested in the subject matter, and I guess you probably will be after buying it, the book offers a number of personal memories and insights that only 'Hooky' can possibly reveal. A great purchase that's also well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have, 4 Jan 2013
This book is perfect for anyone who wants to know more about Joy Division. And I mean JOY DIVISION, the BAND, not just Ian Curtis. Read it in one sitting, could not be happier. Hook is a great story teller, and I cannot wait for the New Order book (whenever that comes out). Highly recommended.
