This is a very unusual and appealing counting book, beautifully illustrated by Alice Melvin; I love her unusual style, which manages to appear simple yet be full of detail . It stands out from others by reason of its lyrical verse and the quirky settings for the birds - the flying ducks on the wall, and the bird mobile are just two examples. We are taken through a spring day - gradually the birds awaken, then enjoy the day and finally settle to sleep again - and then the owl wakens. Not only will children learn their numbers (and it's good to see a counting book going up to 20), they will learn about our birds too. A lovely bok for sharing which will repay many visits.

An absolutely beautiful book. The rhyming text is great, the illustrations beautiful and the counting concept really well introduced. Also really good for learning common uk birds. A real favourite with my 4 year old son. Buy it !

Although beautiful and a great learning tool for parents to share with their young children, it didnt really hold my 4 year olds interest like 'The High Street' did. Not a book I would buy as a gift for a child, but more as a gift for a parent; I loved it, the kids were indifferent. I did feel it had been brought more for me to look at!

There are some lovely pictures in this book and it is cleverly done, counting birds through the course of a day. The size of the book is nice - large enough to see the pictures, small enough to handle and the paper is lovely and thick. I'm glad it's a hardback - this feels like a book to look after and treasure. My two and a half year old likes to hear the rhymes and count the birds. It is nice to move beyond the usual storybook owls, chickens and ducks to name chaffinches, pigeons and starlings.

Such a terrific book for children from age three upwards. I say three because the pages are paper and could be torn by active little fingers (even at three!)
It is great because the numbers go up to twenty and not just ten as most counting books do.
Beautiful illustrations. This is a book I may keep for myself to add to my collection of other very well illustrated children's books that I have collected. However, this may be difficult as my grand-daughter has seen it and wants it read to her now !!!

I bought this for the three year old son of a Chinese friend who is keen that he is familiar with English as early as possible. She is really pleased with it as he has just learned to count in Chinese so this book, with it's lovely illustrations, can be easily used alongside his Chinese counting books.
