This review is from: Daido Moriyama (Paperback)
Moriyama is quite simply a photographer whose work hits you like a sucker punch. The immediate impact is dizzying. His well known (and much copied) are-bure-boke style works on an immediate, visceral level.

However, looking beyond the out of focus, tilted, grainy and blurry compositions one sees that he is not all surface and gimmick but his work operates on a much deeper level.

This book is a brilliant introduction to the man who is the photographer's photographer, a man who has seemingly oozed photobooks from his every pore. The well thought essays trace his rise to Demi-god status. Fortunately Moriyama is not simply a man of the moment but a man who has poured fifty years of his life into making exceptional and deep photographs.

It is still shocking today in this supposed post everything age to be hit on such a level by work that leaps from the page.

For me, personally, what I love about Moriyamas pictures is the feeling of apocalypse he portrays. His grain and darkroom work turns rain, snow and sea spray into leaves of volcanic ash floating on a breeze. His hard shadows turn neutral gazes into studies of despair and mistrust. I find this deeply affecting and demonstrative of his skill to turn the everyday into the otherworldly. He is a visionary who is only now being given his rightful place on the world stage.

I thoroughly recommend this book.

A good introduction to Moriyama. Some good essays that are worth reading . The photos are not presented particularly well but that is a minor complaint.
