5.0 out of 5 stars The Boy David Revealed., 10 Feb. 2013

This review is from: David Steel: Rising Hope to Elder Statesman (Hardcover)
David Torrance has made something of a name for himself as a biographer of Scottish politicians. His books on Alex Salmond and George Younger are particularly good.I think this book would have been better sub-titled "A Political Biography" as Steels private life is barely touched on.In his public life Steel emerges as a sharp political operator, who should have held government office. As a politician he was streets ahead of the hapless, weak Nick Clegg.Torrance has done his research well and Steel emerges as not really likeable and rather obsessed by titles-"Just call me Sir David".It also emerges that Steel saw the job of being the first "Presiding Officer" of the Scottish Parliament as being a cushy retirement job and was annoyed when the controversy over the new Parliament building meant he had to work quite hard. If you liked Torrance on Salmond -you will like this!
