My son loved this book. At 14 he is a little older than the intended audience but I was beginning to think he was allergic to books! He has never willingly picked up a book and many an unfinished title sits on his bookshelf. I have tried all sorts of books from Harry Potter to Chris Ryan to Michael Morpurgo to no avail. He could not put this down! He spent time regaling us with the story and was sad to have finished it. I thoroughly recommend this book.

I loved this story - I bought it for a little girl about 11 years old but started reading myself and was completely gripped. Such wonderful characters - I adored Grot-Nose Charlie - and I will never look at snow in the same way again! What a great idea for a book and I cant wait for there to be another.

I purchased this book for my 8 year old daughter after the author came to school to promote the book.We where not disappointed.
We have shared it as a bed time story and my daughter has raced along reading ahead keen to know the outcome.
I can't wait to see Sam's next book

The Snow Merchant makes for a wonderful read - for both young and old. It's got the cheekiness of a Roald Dahl and the imagination of a Phillip Pullman, and it's an absolute joy to read. For anybody looking to be transported and have their imagination awoken, I cannot recommend Sam Gayton's story enough.

What's more, you'll never look at snow in the same way again.

Sam Gayton came to my school to do a talk about this book to our book club. I read it as soon as I got home and finished it over the weekend. Its really well written, and such a fun read. Its one of the very few books I can re-read. I definitely recommend it.

A wonderful story written from a child's eye view. The plot is straightforward and easy to follow yet full of quirky, original ideas. Lettie's longing for her mother tugs at your heart strings without being sentimental and there is just the right amount of humour as the baddies receive their just deserts. The heros escape from nail-biting crisis after crisis in an exciting way that children will love while the thought provoking heart of the story makes it a pleasure for adults to read. Definitely a winner.

This is a stunning and imaginative children's novel about alchemy, intrigue and the invention of snow. It is the type of book that defies ratings scales and I would give it six out of five stars if I could.

Lettie's encounter with the Snow merchant heralds a wild and original romp through impossible landscapes. Lettie's alchemy has a logic of its own which allows transformations and changes of scale that nurture the imagination like few other books. It's playful but touches on love and divided families and imperfect parents. Perhaps the closest analogy is with Lewis Caroll.

A superbly detailed, imaginative tale from a new author with an undoubted gift for story telling. Read it through in a day with numerous laugh-out-loud moments; delicate, innocent characters and some 'mild peril' to boot. A writer who knows exactly what children enjoy - and this 26 year old too!

Look forward to more of the same from Sam Gayton in the future.
