It is around 35 years since I read Treasure Island and although this graphic novel doesn't boast to be a sequel it takes some of the characters and atmosphere of the original (blood, the sea, malice, revenge; well, lots really) and crafts a new story in rich graphic format. Reading this has sent me back to reading the original, wow, what a gem that is! My favourite part of the graphic book is where Long John Silver introduces us to his men - Black Blood, the holy man, and so on - they are such wonderful characters, I just knew that this was going to be a real "treasure" from then on.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real treasure, 4 Nov 2011
This review is from: Long John Silver Vol.1: Lady Vivian Hastings (Paperback)
I am so pleased I bought this book. I am a huge fan of the original novel, Treasure Island, on which this semi-sequel of sorts is based. The only recurring characters in this graphic novel are John Silver and Squire Trelawney, the latter of which plays a small, but significant role in the development of the plot. The story is something I think Robert Louis Stevenson would be proud of, with the cast of scheming, treacherous characters, all plotting to deceive and doublecross each other.
Matthieu Lauffray's artwork is exquisite, with the beautifully drawn characters, buildings and landscapes- his talent and eye for detail really helps to make the period in which the story is set very evocative.
